ARCHIBALD PRIZE:
The Archibald dirty money is considered to be the virtu tout ensembley portraiture prize and also the most prominent of all art prizes in Australia. The Archibald prize was the first awarded in 1921 from the editor program of the bulletin JF Archibald. The trustees of the art gallery of New South Wales circularize it and the Archibald prize goes to the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, multi-colored by an artist resident in Australia. The prize as of 2007 is $35,000 and is run annually.
The Archibald prize has attracted its fair share of contr oversy over the years as well as several judiciary cases, the most famous was in 1943 when William Dobells win was challenged because of claims it was a caricature kinda than a painting. Also in 1997 turn over Ploeg painted the television characters bananas in pajamas but it was deemed ineligible by the trustees because it was not a painting of a person. Also not to mention in 2004 when Craig Ruddys image of David Gulpilil, which won both the main prize and the peoples preference award, was challenged on the basis that it was a charcoal sketch rather than a painting. These are only a few controversies that curb occurred over the years, so as you can see the Archibald prize is a very controversial competition.
The Archibald prize was named after Jules Francois Archibald, natural in Kildore Victoria in 1856. JF Archibald left school at the age of 14 and was apprenticed to Fairfax and Laurie, later becoming a journalist and founding editor of the bulletin. JF Archibald started the bulletin in 1880 in Tandem with John Haynes. Archibalds obsession with his job came at a price, in 1903 poor health and depression obligate him out of the editors chair. JF Archibald died at St Vincents hospital on the 10 of September 1919 and was buried in the Catholic section of the Waverley cemetery.
