Dracula literary Critique
In Bram Stokers Dracula, the nigh powerful symbolism is blood. He takes the blood that means so much to the believers of this allegory and has it represent to a greater extent than even they could imagine. Blood is the main end associated with lamias. From a myth point of view, it is the basis of life for vampires as they feed off humans. Stoker takes the significance of this symbol and puts his testify twist to the meaning of blood. He combines the vampires sucking blood and cleansing with cozy intercourse, examples of this is; Dracula and Mina and Jonathon and the three vampire brides of Dracula, which completely confuses the reader. Stoker knew bloods importance in vampire history and used the symbolism to show his own sexual wants. When Lucy is having transfusions done on her; first from Arthur Holmwood, second from Dr. Seward, and the weird vampire baptism between Dracula and Mina all have the feral sexual feelings about them.
As a reader you pick out that Dracula is really wrong in what he is doing, plainly because he is giving Mina the sexual urge to grow a vampire it seems to her that it is very pleasurable to be a vampire. This is the twist to what I was talking about earlier in the paper. That is why Stoker used blood as the most important symbol in the novel; to create a strong horror story that was not just in the words of the book, but in the minds of the reader. The biggest form of symbolism in the book is at the end of the disgusting vampire baptism of Mina. This image is the main place where Stoker attempts to emotionally confuse the reader, which he did very well to me. As the scene begins Stoker paints a picture of the Count pressing Minas brass instrument to his bare, bleeding chest. The next part of the scene continues, it becomes even more disturbing and sexual.
